Volunteer Opportunities at Highland Medical Center
Volunteers are an important part of the care experience at Highlands Medical Center, helping create a welcoming and supportive environment for patients, families and staff. From greeting visitors at the Information Desk to assisting with office needs, operating the Gift Shop and helping transport patients, volunteers play a valuable role throughout the hospital.
Local clergy generously give their time to provide chaplain services, offering comfort and support to patients, visitors and team members. We are grateful for the dedication and compassion our volunteers bring to Highlands Medical Center each day.

Opportunities
Volunteers may serve in a variety of roles, including:
- Greeting and assisting visitors
- Supporting patient care units
- Providing administrative support
- Offering spiritual care as volunteer chaplains
- Participating in auxiliary or community outreach programs
Volunteer opportunities are based on hospital needs and individual interests.

Volunteer
Requirements
All volunteers, including those participating in observation or shadowing programs, must complete the following:
- Volunteer orientation attendance
- TB skin test within the past 12 months
- Proof of required immunizations
- Completion of required paperwork and background screening if applicable
Ambassador Program
The Highlands Medical Center Ambassador Program, “Seeking the Difference,” is designed for high school juniors and seniors who are interested in pursuing a career in healthcare. Selected students have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a hospital setting while supporting patients, staff and the community.
Participants are chosen through an interview process and represent local schools throughout the program year.
Program Opportunities
Ambassadors benefit from a variety of educational and service-based experiences, including:
- Earning community service hours for college preparation
- Gaining exposure to a wide range of healthcare careers
- Building communication, leadership and teamwork skills
- Working with individuals from diverse backgrounds
- Developing professional connections for future academic and career goals
- Participating in hospital and community events as program representatives
Program Requirements
To be considered for the Ambassador Program, students must:
- Be a current high school junior or senior in Scottsboro City or Jackson County Schools
- Maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher
- Demonstrate strong communication skills and a positive, outgoing attitude
- Attend hospital orientation
- Participate in bi-monthly “Lunch and Learn” sessions
- Complete 30 service hours during the program year
- Meet all health and safety requirements
- Attend and represent Highlands Medical Center at designated events
Service Opportunities
Ambassadors may support the hospital through a variety of roles, including:
- Greeting patients and visitors at entrances
- Delivering flowers or gifts to patients
- Assisting with directions throughout the facility
- Supporting departmental projects and initiatives
- Assisting with Highlands Medical Center Foundation events
- Participating in service projects that benefit the Ambassador Scholarship Fund
