At HH Heart Center Pediatric Cardiology, we are privileged to witness incredible stories of strength and resilience. We want to share the journey of Mateo, who began facing unexpected and serious health challenges at only five months old.

When Mateo’s pediatrician noticed he was not gaining weight and had an abnormal heart sound, he was referred to our clinic. A heart-specific ultrasound scan called an echocardiogram revealed the source of the problem: two holes in Mateo’s tiny, little heart.

Drs. Caicedo and Singhapakdi and the rest of our team continued to carefully monitor Mateo while he awaited surgery to repair his heart. We were inspired by his resilience as he endured multiple respiratory illnesses during this time, but fought through.

On September 10, Mateo underwent surgery at Children’s of Alabama in Birmingham, performed by Dr. Dabal. The procedure successfully closed the two openings in his heart, which will allow him to finally grow and thrive.

Seeing Mateo at his first follow-up appointment was the greatest reward. As Dr. Caicedo noted, seeing Mateo now, “breathing comfortably, gaining weight appropriately, and without recurrent admissions — represented more than just a good surgical outcome. For the team, it symbolized the culmination of coordinated care… and the emotional relief and joy in seeing a previously fragile infant thrive, reminding everyone why these efforts matter.”

His mom perfectly summed up their experience with HH Pediatric Cardiology, sharing, “The doctors know exactly what they’re doing, and Dr. Caicedo is the best.”

We are proud of the ultrasound technology used to diagnose Mateo, which was generously funded by The Huntsville Hospital Foundation. Their support helps us provide more than 150 heart scans each month, ensuring more little hearts can grow strong and healthy right here at home.
