Athens-Limestone Hospital, part of Huntsville Hospital Health System (HH Health), has opened a new 25-bed patient care unit that expands hospital capacity, improves patient flow and provides dedicated space for observation care and outpatient infusion services.

The new Acute Observation and Infusion Unit represents continued investment in Athens-Limestone Hospital as it grows to meet the health care needs of one of Alabama’s fastest-growing communities. The unit is designed for patients who require short-term treatment, diagnostic evaluation or ongoing clinical assessment.

“Limestone County continues to experience tremendous growth, and Huntsville Hospital Health System is committed to ensuring Athens-Limestone Hospital has the resources and capacity to grow with the community,” said Sam Dean, executive vice president of regional hospital operations for HH Health. “This 25-bed expansion is another example of our continued investment in Athens-Limestone and our commitment to strengthening access to high-quality care close to home.”

The Acute Observation and Infusion Unit will admit, monitor and care for observation patients whose conditions require additional assessment or treatment but may not require an inpatient hospital admission. By providing a dedicated setting for observation-level care, the unit will also support more efficient patient movement throughout the hospital, including from the Emergency Department.

In addition, the Acute Observation and Infusion Unit will provide outpatient intravenous (IV) infusion services, giving patients a convenient, dedicated location for scheduled infusion therapies. A multidisciplinary team with a focus on patient safety, quality and an exceptional patient experience will provide care on the unit.

This addition is the latest example of HH Health’s continued commitment to strengthening local hospitals, expanding access to care and ensuring communities across North Alabama have the resources they need to receive high-quality care close to home.
