Pharmacy Residency

Huntsville Hospital is the flagship institution of the HH Health System and one of the largest not-for-profit community hospital systems in the nation. Its Madison County facilities include 971 licensed beds, ten intensive care units, numerous specialty services, and a state-of-the-art Pharmacy Department. More than 300 Pharmacy team members provide medication-related services across a broad range of inpatient and ambulatory practice settings.

For the 2027–2028 residency year, Huntsville Hospital anticipates offering five pharmacy residency programs: PGY1 Pharmacy with nine positions, PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy with three positions, PGY2 Infectious Diseases Pharmacy with one position, PGY2 Oncology Pharmacy with two positions, and PGY2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy with one position in ASHP pre-candidate status.

The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency has been ASHP-accredited since 1984 and has trained more than 170 residents. The PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency began in 2010 and was accredited in 2012. The PGY2 Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Residency began in 2018 and was accredited in 2019, followed by the PGY2 Oncology Pharmacy Residency, which began in 2019 and was accredited in 2021.

Our residency programs allow residents to pursue their individual interests and professional goals through flexible scheduling and customized learning experiences. Wherever possible, experiences are continued throughout the year rather than limited to a single rotation. Although structured teaching, coaching, and feedback remain important, the emphasis is on learning by doing. Residents participate directly in medication therapy management, progressively assume the responsibilities of practicing pharmacists, and take ownership of medication-related care and patient outcomes.

Pharmacy Mission Statement

The Huntsville Hospital Department of Pharmacy is committed to serving the drug therapy needs of patients and health care providers to ensure: improvement in patient outcomes and quality of life; rational and cost-effective pharmacotherapeutic decisions; efficient utilization of resources in structuring systems and services; safe use of medications.
