Huntsville Hospital Health System today announced it has received Certificate of Need (CON) approval from the Alabama State Health Planning and Development Agency to construct a new medical facility to serve residents of Lawrence County.
The project will be located on Highway 24 in Moulton and includes a $14 million investment in construction and equipment. The 10,000-square-foot facility will include an extended-hours urgent care clinic, diagnostic imaging center, respiratory and physical therapy, laboratory services and a community room. The 20-acre site allows for future expansion.
The CON Board approved the project unanimously, and the investment by HH Health was commended by the group’s chairman.
“Improving local, community-based health care services is critical to our mission. We are proud to partner with Lawrence County to offer state-of-the-art facilities and continue to improve health care access for its residents,” said Jeff Samz, HH Health president and CEO. “Operating rural health care services is very difficult in Alabama, but with the continued support of the community, we believe this new approach will provide a path to sustainable delivery.”
Last year, Lawrence Medical Center (LMC) concluded inpatient medical services at its existing facility. Since that time, remaining services have continued as an outpatient department of Decatur Morgan Hospital, part of the HH Health system. Decatur Morgan will oversee the development and management of the new Lawrence Medical Center.
“We’ve been very pleased with the utilization of our current outpatient services at LMC and continue to see the community take advantage of local care,” said Kelli Powers, president of Decatur Morgan Hospital. “This new facility will further enhance our ability to deliver high-quality services such as 3D mammography, as well as upgrades to our current CT and MRI capabilities. It will also play a large role in the continued recruitment of physicians and providers to Lawrence County.”
Construction is expected to begin in May and be completed within 14 to 16 months. LMC also operates four rural health clinics in Lawrence County.
